3- ACP Stories: Retaliation

Chapter 1

“… He’s coming around, give him some space,” spoke a stranger.

Daniel began stirring as he lay in the hospital bed.

“Wha-… wh-where am I?” he asked.

“It’s amazing you survived that crash,” spoke the stranger, who appeared to be a nurse, “The doctor will be in shortly.”

At that moment, the nurse closed the door to his room and Daniel began looking around for the first time. He noticed the tan walls in the bland room; he saw the fan as it swiftly turned around its axis. Amused, Daniel began trying to count the blades to the fan.

“One… Two… Three… Four… Five… Six… Seven… Seven? There couldn’t be more than five,” he thought to himself.

Suddenly, the door to the door opened, revealing a man in uniform with a health cross on his breast pocket.

“Hello Daniel, if you could follow me down the hall,” he spoke.

Daniel did as told, and weaved through the hospital to a dark room with lamps.

“Hello again, my name is Dr. Albert Hamilton, remember? “

“Remember?” replied Daniel, “I’ve never met you before in my life.”

“Well, at least we know the retrograde amnesia hasn’t worn off yet. Now Daniel, can you tell me what this            is?” he asked as he held up the tablet in the baggy that Daniel had been holding onto while in the plane.

“I don’t know what that is,” replied Daniel.

“Ok then, can you at least tell me what the name ACP stands for?” asked the doctor.

Daniel squinted his eyes and tried to concentrate. He searched the front and back of his brain for the answer, but couldn’t find it in his memory.

“I… don’t know,” spoke Daniel.

“Interesting. Ok Daniel, I believe we are done here,” stated the doctor as he left the room, allowing the nurse to show Daniel back to his room.

“Try and get some rest,” ordered the nurse as she closed the door to his room.

Curious, Daniel waited five minutes before leaving the room, checking the patient rooms around his.

In the first room he came upon, he found a boy his age with a large wrap around the right side of his face.

“Who are you?” asked Daniel.

“Packer! Am I glad to see you!” spoke the somewhat cheerful boy.

“Packer?” questioned Daniel.

“Yeah, Packer. Its me, Houndy. Remember? The plane was shot down by the androids. From what I remember, you took a nasty hit to the head,” replied the boy.

“What happened to your face, Houndy?” asked Daniel.

“Oh, well I was near the fuel tank and, uh, it wasn’t very pretty,” answered Houndy.

With that, Daniel left the room and approached the next doorway.

“Hello?”

Daniel didn’t receive a reply. He continued to walk over towards the bed to find a figure with long hair and multiple IVs coming out of her arms. Soon after, a nurse walked into the room.

“Oh, well I see you found your friend… I think she went by ‘Pinki’,” spoke the nurse as she looked down at a clipboard.

Daniel continued to look at Pinki. The way she laid there like a doll creeped him out, so he left the room.

“Daniel, um, I wouldn’t go looking for your friend Batin because we weren’t able to find him after the crash. It was as if he disappeared in thin air,” assured the nurse.

With that, Daniel returned to his bed and began a deep sleep as he pondered basic questions of his existence, starting with, “Who am I?”

Chapter 2

Inside one of the military base’s offices, the unharmed ACP soldiers gathered around for dinner.

“I’m glad we were able to get to you all when we could,” started the Colonel.

“Yeah, but coming a little bit earlier couldn’t have hurt, right Kt?” joked Klug between chewing food.

“Don’t call me ‘Kt’,” came the reply.

“What’s wrong with you, Kt?” asked Fox.

“Stop with the codenames! I’ve watched so many freaking people die right in front of my eyes, and we’re going to continue to use kiddy codenames?! No! So stop with the ‘Kt’; my name is Kyle, and you, Klug, are Tom,” shot back Kyle.

With that, Kyle left the room and slammed the door behind him.

“You can tell this war is really taking a toll on everyone,” spoke Saint as she drank some of her water.

“Well don’t worry; you aren’t allowed to leave this base anyway, so your war is done,” stated the Colonel.

“So that’s it? We’re down?” questioned Pinky.

“According to the United States Military branch, you are prohibited from returning to battle,” replied the Colonel.

“Well, why? We’ve almost won,” continued Pinky.

“Almost won? You’ve put the lives of hundreds of children at stake, and now it is up to our military to rescue them. That is obviously not a victory,” challenged the Colonel.

“So what are we going to do?” asked Sonic.

“You may stay here as long as needed,” stated the Colonel.

As they arrived at their barracks, the group began to empty their duffel bags that they had left with the military before their recent battles with the androids. Suddenly, as Sonic dumped out his bag, the hand of an android fell to the ground with a metallic thud.

“What’s that?!” shrieked Pinky, now referred to as Tori, as she stepped away from the robotic hand.

“I… don’t know. I never remember putting that in there,” replied Sonic.

Then, the hand began to glow a golden color, turning the color on and off.

“Uh, guys,” began Bfan, “what’s that doing?”

“It’s almost as if it’s using some sort of signal,” replied Sheila.

“Then they know where we are,” interrupted Kyle as he began to pack away his things and hand the others their bags.

“Why are you packing up?” asked Saint.

“Because,” began Kyle, “if they can use that hand to track us then they can find this base and destroy us.”

“Well, where the heck can we even go?!”  questioned Fox.

“I don’t know,” replied Kyle, “but I do know we have to rescue the others in the hospital.”

With that, the group left their barracks and headed towards the military hospital with weapons at hand.

Chapter 3

The hospital door did little help to keep the lights of the hallway out of Daniel’s room. Not that he’d be able to sleep either way. The whole night, Daniel had been debating over and over in his head what everyone had been saying.

What plane crash? What are androids? And why was everyone calling me Daniel? Suddenly, Daniel felt a wave of slumber sweep over him as his eyes slowly adjusted to the hallway light seeping in.

“He’s awake again,” spoke the nurse as she began putting a new IV in Daniel’s arm.

As Daniel awoke, he realized he was facing the blinds of the window in his room. In an instant, he squinted his eyes and rolled to the opposite side from the sunlight.

“Wha-…wh-where am I?” spoked the slightly-sedated Daniel.

“Dr. Hamilton, he’s the same, once again,” spoke a different nurse as she wrote on a clipboard.

“Now Daniel,” continued Dr. Hamilton as he picked up the tablet inside the baggy, “can you tell me what this is?”

Daniel began rubbing his temples thoroughly as he tried to concentrate.

“I… I don’t know,” replied Daniel.

“Alright, well, can you tell me what ACP stands for?” questioned Dr. Hamilton.

“All cats party?” came the serious reply as Daniel looked as though he was still thinking, even when he ended up replying with an answer he simply made up in his head.

Dr. Hamilton made a slight chuckle as he heard the answer.

“Daniel, you probably don’t know what this is, but you have retrograde amnesia. This type is different in that you don’t just lose memory of the time in which your head was inflicted with the injury, but sometimes you aren’t even able to remember things long ago in your past. These things could include your name, where you live, all sorts of things. Now, do you remember me asking you those same questions yesterday?” asked Dr. Hamilton.

Daniel face instantly began wincing from this news. For all he knew, this was a complete stranger talking nonsense about him.

“Yesterday? I’ve never met you before in my life!” shouted Daniel as he began having a panic attack.

“Nurse, please, give him the sedating medication,” replied Dr. Hamilton sharply.

As told, the nurse began pouring the sedating medication into the IV in Daniel’s arm. Within five seconds, Daniel blacked out.

The next time Daniel awoke from his “nap”, he had noticed a grotesque plate of food for dinner was on his tray table. Disgusted, Daniel pushed away the macaroni and cheese accidentally mixed with pudding. Then, Daniel stood up, his portable IV computer dragged beside him.

As Daniel walked around the hospital, he noticed a few of the rooms had the words: A.C.P. SOLDIER under the name on the nameplate for that patient’s hospital room. Glancing inside one of them, he noticed someone grinning and motioning for him to come into their room. Cautiously, Daniel approached him.

“Daniel! It’s me, Houndy,” replied the grinning figure.

Daniel gave a slight smile but continued looking around the room.

“So, I see you’ve still got the amnesia, huh?” Houndy spoke glumly.

Still, Daniel continued walking around the room, messing with the blinds on the window and anything else he could find. With that, Daniel left the room and approached the room right next door.

As he turned the corner, he found a girl who was only slightly stirring, her eyes sleep ridden. Suddenly, her gaze turned towards Daniel.

“Daniel…” she spoke before passing out from exhaustion.

With that, Daniel headed back to his room. He began wondering to himself what the heck was happening around him. What’s ACP? Who’s Houndy? And why is everyone calling me Daniel?

Suddenly, a person covered in blood and gore ran into the hospital.

“PLEASE HELP ME!” screamed the solider as he ran to the nurse’s desk.

“Oh my god! Calm down!” replied the apparently freaked out nurse.

“…You… don’t… know how many… Nachos I had to kill… to escape that wreckage…” replied the soldier as he passed out on the floor.

Immediately, a group of nurses and doctors began lifting him onto a stretcher. Under Dr. Hamilton’s supervision, they began charging the defibrillator to give the soldier a “shock of life”.

“It’ll be ok, Batin,” spoke one of the nurses as she comfortingly stroked his head.

Daniel watched in horror as each shock made Batin’s chest rise and fall drastically.

Chapter 4

Daniel sat in his hospital bed before his muted TV, listening to the nurses and doctors discussing the situation the soldier was in.

“He’s in grave shape. However, I do believe that he will be able to make a full recovery,” Daniel had heard an anonymous nurse report.

“Great, well, I believe that we should send him home to his family, shall we?” conversed another doctor.

With that, Daniel heard the numerous footsteps isolate, returning to their current duties on hand.

“It’s a shame with all those kids,” whispered one doctor, “having to send them all home to their families?”

“I know,” replied another doctor, “as soon as these guys get healthy, they’ll all be home while the military does the rest.”

With that, Daniel fell into a deep sleep.

“I thought you all might like some dessert to cheer you up,” spoke the Colonel ever so cheerfully as he entered the barracks.

In reaction to what he saw, the Colonel dropped his plate of jelly filled donuts on the hardwood floors.

“Alright everyone,” began Kyle, “this is it. Once we get in this weapon depot, we can head right over to the hospital.”

“Okay”s and “Sounds good to me”s replied throughout the group.

“No,” came a blatant reply.

The group of soldiers was astonished to realize Saint, leader of their beloved army, had given to refusing order.

“We can’t just go rescue a couple injured soldiers and expect to win the war with just us,” rationalized Saint.

“Saint, your missing the point here,” replied Kyle, “We can still win this. We just need to figure out a plan of action just as soon as we rescue them from the hospital.”

“Oh really?” replied Saint, “Then I guess you’ll have to do it without me.”

With that, Saint ripped her leader insignia off her uniform and walked away.

“Where the hell is she going?” replied Sonic scornfully.

The easier question would have been, “Where could she be going?”

Immediately, the group realized her plan of action.

“Crap, she’s going to alarm the officers!” screamed Klug as the group picked up rocks and broke the lock to the weapon depot.

One by one, the soldiers grabbed rifles and a plethora of ammo. As usual, Sonic grabbed a scope to go along with his rifle to maintain his marksman reputation.

Nearly simultaneously, the Colonel and Saint arrived in the main office of the military base.

“Sound the alarm! This soldier here tells me they’re going to break out the soldiers from the hospital and escape to continue their war!” alarmed the Colonel.

As soon as they had left the weapons depot, the siren had begun sounding to alert the whole base.  The spotlight shone fiercely on the soldiers as they ran for cover.

“What do we do now?” asked Tori.

“We didn’t come this far to surrender just yet,” preached Kyle, “Aim to injure, don’t kill.”

With that, the group approached the hospital entrance. Already, two soldiers had been positioned in front of the glass doors.

“Now guys,” began Kyle, “lets do this in a calm, planned manner.”

Before Kyle had even finished his sentence, the other soldiers had charged the door, shooting both soldiers in the legs and their arm holding the gun. With little time to think, the baffled Kyle scurried over to meet up with his fellow soldiers.

“Tommy never meant to harm, only maim or seriously injure,” joked Klug as he awkwardly stepped over the injured guards.

“Crap! It’s a code-activated door,” moaned Sheila.

“Oh yeah? Watch this,” spoke Fox as she gunned the glass out of the doorframe, allowing a simple entrance into the hospital.

“It really is nice to have the power of crazy on your side,” spoke Sonic, in complete relish from Fox’s actions.

One by one, the soldiers stepped through the improvised door Fox had made.

“We’re not going to hurt you! Just tell us where our comrades are,” reasoned Kyle with the doctors at gunpoint.

“They’re all on floor five I swear!” spoke the frightened doctor.

With that, the group casually walked to the elevator as Sonic pressed the button labeled with a cursive “5” on it. As their ascent began to floor five, the smooth, soul sounds of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up” began playing as elevator music.

(For an example of the situation, here’s the song)

“Such a good song,” marveled Klug, “That is, until Kanye ruined it with his sampling of it in his ‘Touch the Sky’.”

“Are you kidding? Kanye did Curtis justice making that song,” replied Kyle.

“Yeah, I mean, both are truly amazing, timeless songs,” agreed Sonic.

“Alright, but just so I’m clear, we all absolutely love Curtis’s ‘Move On Up’?” assured Klug.

“Definitely.”

“Truly a classic.”

“My kids will be listening to it.”

“Amen to that.”

“Guys, shut up. We’re here,” replied Fox.

In Daniel’s room, he had awoken in a cold sweat from a strange dream he had had for numerous nights now. It always consisted of children dying and robot-like creatures slaughtering them like pigs. In the end, Daniel would always be the last one alive, only to gunned down by the largest of the metal creatures. He had always awoken at that part.

As usual after having an uncomfortable dream, Daniel woke up and strolled around his dark hospital room. He then approached his dresser. The dresser looked very plain, covered with a chipped white paint. He opened the dresser to reveal his uniform, neatly folded with a little smear of blood on the collar. Daniel began moving his Major General insignia between his thumb and index finger, wondering why such a high prestige item was in his room. Instantaneously, Daniel heard the elevator open and heard screams of terror in the hallway. He couldn’t help but run towards them.
