Prologue
A dark cat slunk into the hollow tree stump.
Moonlight filtered into a hole on the roof of the stump, giving just enough light to make out a silvery grey queen curled up in a nest.
“Is he safe?” She said, hollowed.
“Yes, and do not mourn for your kit to long. We all knew the risk of……”
“Do not say it!” The queen hissed.
“Well the fire should weaken Leafclan; it will scare away all the food and leave them without cover. An easy target for predators” He changed the subject.
“It was a stupid plan, it killed my kit! You know very well not to mess with two-leg stuff. And look where it has gotten us!” She screeched. Her neck fur bristled.
“All hope is not lost, we can easily rebuild. We are the strongest clan in the valley” He kept his calmness.
“Hope?! When we-“Her screech was cut off by a scuffling noise outside.
“Sandclaw!” The dark tabby ordered.
“Hold on, Dewflower I have something for you” Came a low mew.
Suddenly a sand-colored tom leaped easily into the den.
A low wail echoed around the den.
The dark tabby tom narrowed his eyes.
“I found this little thing while the clan abandoned their camp. It was left wandering around the forest. I decided it was fit for Desertclan” The tom dropped his bundle.
“A kit!” Dewflower gasped. “It looks just like Stormkit!” She said as the tiny kit wobbled toward the milky-smelling nest.
“Give your report already, or did u spend all your time taking care of this kit” He spat out the word.
“Well, sadly the fire didn’t spread as far as we hoped. It only got near the Mistclan border. The marshes stopped it”
“Doesn’t matter, Sandclaw tell me more about this kit” Dewflower pressed.
“It looks exactly like Stormkit, it’s a she-cat, and she has green eyes”
“Green?!” Dewflower gasped. “Stormkit had BLUE eyes!”
“Some kit’s eyes change colors as they grow” Sandclaw assured her.
Dewflower looked at the dark tabby “Scorchstar, can we keep her?” She begged.
“I don’t see why not” He said gruffly.
Dewflower immediately began to wash the kits coat.
“Stormkit…..” She purred.
“Let’s get back to camp, they will be waiting” Scorchstar ordered.
Dewflower picked up the tiny kit.
Secretly the dark tabby was seething with frustration and anticipation. Sure he failed in his first plan, but he gained a new warrior, and possibly a hostage.
No, we can do the hostage stuff later. We can use her…..
Chapter 1
Stormkit stretched and yawned. She felt the cold air and nuzzled closer to Dewflower.
“You might as well get up” Dewflower said as she pushed Stormkit out of her nest.
She mewed irritably.
“But it’s so cold!” Stormkit complained.
“Do you want to see Redpaw before he leaves camp” Dewflower purred.
Stormkit brightened up. It was Redpaw’s first solo hunting mission.
She scrambled up and bounded out of the bramble wall.
She gasped when she hit the cold air. Her fluffy fur didn’t help much against the cold.
She spotted Redpaw talking to his mentor, Leopardclaw by the fresh-kill pile.
He turned his back on the enemy! Deadly mistake, she thought.
She crept directly behind him. Stepping lightly and being careful not to step on any twigs.
She waggled her hind-quarters as she prepared to jump.
She held her breath when Leopardclaw’s eyes darted toward her, but then flickered back toward his apprentice.
She leapt, and fastened her teeth carefully on his ear, purring.
Redpaw yowled, then staggered dramatically.
“A Leafclan warrior got in the camp!” He yowled, which turned heads in his direction.
Then he collapsed on the ground, as if he couldn’t go on.
“Can I eat him?” She asked Leopardclaw.
“I don’t know about eating my apprentice. But I doubt he would taste very good” He purred.
“Ge-r ooff me” He mumbled through fur.
Stormkit leapt off him.
“You are quiet the hunter” Sandclaw said, coming up from behind her.
“But you’re becoming a nuisance, and giving the elders a heart attack” His whiskers twitched with amusement.
“Oh” Stormkit scuffed her paws in embarrassment.
“She was just practicing her hunter skills” Redpaw came up.
“Well you can practice hunting Redpaw when you’re an apprentice” Sandclaw licked her ears affectionately.
“When will that be?” She squeaked.
“Soon”
“I want it to be now!” She demanded.
“Your almost six moons old, it could be any day now” He assured her.
“We best be going” Leopardclaw flicked his tail for Redpaw to follow.
“I will catch you the juiciest squirrel in the whole valley!” Redpaw promised as he walked up the ravine.
“Well I promised Sunpaw I would take him out on a patrol, be good” Sandclaw called as he walked away.
Feeling cross, she headed toward the Fresh-kill pile. Suddenly a leaf drifted across her face.
She leapt on it without hesitation and began to claw it to pieces.
She looked up in embarrassment. Apprentices don’t play with leaves. She continued to the fresh-kill pile.
She remembered when Redpaw asked her to teach him how to catch butterflies when they were in the nursery together.
Now all of the sudden he’s a ‘paw and now he is better than her!
You wish! Stormkit thought, crossly.
She noticed Redpaw hadn’t left yet, and was looking at the sky.
Hoping a bird will come and fall on your paws? Stormkit thought.
Suddenly a loud yowl rang out.
What happened now? Did someone step on a thorn?
Suddenly, she heard Dewflower call her name.
“STORMKIT!” She wailed.
Suddenly she heard flapping, and air slapping her back.
Stormkit ran.
“Heellpp!” She wailed.
Suddenly sharp claws gripped her back, and the ground fell away from her.
NO! A voice screamed in her mind. It wasn’t hers…
She was lifted two fox-tails off the ground before she regained her head. She stretched out a paw and clawed the hawk.
It screeched and started to slow down.
“REDPAW HELP!” She wailed.
Suddenly, Redpaw was jumping up on the hawk.
“Put her down!” He hissed. His claws began to slide down, and he fell off the bird.
She was carried five fox-tails up the ground.
She noticed that it was bleeding heavily. The extra weight made it almost impossible to fly, but the hawk was facing starvation. It would do anything.
Stormkit began to wiggle, and the hawk lost altitude.
Redpaw leapt again, an amazing five fox-tails, but this time he gripped her leg instead, and pulled her down.
She fell with a heavy THUD onto the packed ground, and darkness closed around her.
She woke up on a soft, warm nest, and opened her eyes.
Redpaw was next to her, his fur was almost touching. He was talking to Sandclaw and Dewflower.
She sat up.
“Redpaw?” Stormkit asked confusedly.
“You’re in the medicine cat den” He explained. “You had a nasty fall. Luckily nothing was broken”
Stormkit blinked. “You saved me!” She gasped.
“Well we can’t have hawks eating kits in leaf-bare, can we?” He teased.
Dewflower groomed Stormkit. “I’m so grateful to Redpaw, he is a hero” Stormkit noticed how Redpaw puffed out his chest when Dewflower said this.
She twitched her whiskers.
Scorchstar walked into the Medicine cat den with Riverstream.
The brown medicine cat sniffed Stormkit all over again.
“She’s fine” He said to Scorchstar.
He breathed out with relief.
“You gave us quiet the scare” He growled.
“I’m sorry” She hung her head.
“You have to always be alert” He went on.
“What good what it have done to the clan if you were dead? You should have seen that hawk”
“I’m sorry” She repeated.
“And I think you learned your lesson, the hard way. And that is why I have a surprise for you” He walked out of the den.
“All cats that can catch their own prey come beneath the Stonerock for a clan meeting!”
Stormkit’s heart skipped.
“Go on!” Redpaw pushed her out.
The clan had already gathered. She puffed out her chest and strutted toward the Stonerock with dignity. Her light grey tabby fur coat was shining under the bright moonlight.
“Stormkit you have been with us for 6 moons” He said.
Suddenly, Stormkit had a weird feeling that something wasn’t right, but she hid her anxiety.
“Do you promise to uphold the warrior code, even at the cost of your life?”
“I do” she said without hesitation.
“Then I gave you your apprentice name. From this moment on you will be known as Stormpaw”
“Stormpaw! Stormpaw!” Redpaw started the call.
“Your mentor will be Greycloud. He has much wisdom as well as courage. Learn well from him”
Stormpaw trotted over and licked Greycloud’s shoulder.
His blue eyes sparked with interest. She shuffled her paws.
“Hello” she whispered.
As the clan dispersed, Redpaw came bounding up.
“Can we show her the territory?” He begged.
“I think Greycloud wants some alone time to get to know his apprentice” Leopardclaw steered Redpaw away.
“Let’s go” He lead her up the ravine.
Suddenly the thick trees surrounding the camp fell away to a sandy, sparse territory.
“Tell me, how are we different from other clans?” Greycloud asked.
“Eh, I haven’t seen any other clan cats” She said embarrassedly.
“Sorry, I forgot. But I will ask the same question after were done, and I expect you to have an answer” Greycloud said.
Stormpaw nodded with determination.
Her paws were sore from walking on Stone all the time, and she was glad when they headed into soft sand.
“Why do my paws hurt so much?” She complained.
Greycloud looked at her with surprise. He lifted his paw to show her his pad. It was harder than her soft pad. She lifted her paw to show him.
“That’s not fair!” She was probably the only cat in the clan who can’t walk on rock very much. And most of the territory was rock! They call it Desertclan for a reason!
She sighed.
“Well it would mean you would be able to stalker much quieter” He said.
“I guess…” She trailed off and looked around.
“Where are we? There is nothing but sand here!” She felt vulnerable.
“This is what we call the sandpit. It’s almost impossible to hunt anything but birds here. Over there is the Rockfall. It is an easy place to catch lizards, but watch out for snakes. Behind the Rockfall is the Leafclan border. We will head over there”
As they padded toward the border scents wafted over them.
They seemed almost….familiar.
As they got closer the ground became softer.
The forest seemed so dark and hostile, but she seemed drawn to it.
“Hello Goldenfur” Greycloud said suddenly as they halted at the border.
“I don’t see anyone” She said as she peered in.
Suddenly a golden tom slid into view.
“Greetings, Greycloud” Goldenfur said.
“Who is this?” He asked, looking at Stormpaw.
“My new apprentice” Greycloud seemed proud to say this.
Stormpaw noticed how Goldenfur seemed slightly thinner, and his coat was longer. His paws and hind legs were bigger, like hers.
She lifted her front paw to compare.
“My pads are soft like yours” She said.
“That’s strange” said another voice. A handsome rusty colored tom with black stripes padded up behind Goldenfur.
“This is my apprentice, Hawkpaw” Goldenfur introduced.
“H-hello” Stormpaw was suddenly very shy. She shuffled her paws.
“This is my first time out of camp” He said.
“M-mine to!” Stormpaw said.
“Your kinda weird” Hawkpaw mewed.
Stormpaw looked away in embarrassment.
She felt like she was about to die from it.
Hawkpaw blinked when he realized what he did and hastily said: “No, not like that. I mean you’re kinda like me. It was as if we were in the same clan”
Stormpaw’s head still drooped.
“I think we better be going now. I’m sorry, my apprentice isn’t very good with she-cats” Goldenfur apologized.
“Goldenfur!” Hawkpaw gasped, and Stormpaw couldn’t help but roll with laughter.
“Maybe that’s why Amberstar gave u Hawkpaw as an apprentice” Greycloud said. It was clear they were good friends.
Hawkpaw clearly had enough, and disappeared into the woods.
Stormpaw felt sorry for Hawkpaw, so she quickly whispered “They’re just saying that because they can’t get she-cats of their own” so low that the older cats couldn’t here.
Hawkpaw had to hold his breath so he wouldn’t laugh as he darted out of view.
“Cmon, let’s get going”
Chapter 2
A moon and a half passed since Stormpaw last saw Hawkpaw, but she met his sister, Foxpaw, while out hunting and fell into the ditch that separated part of their territory.
She had been unable to scramble up the loose dirt.
“Need some help?” Said an amused voice. A rusty colored head popped over the side.
“Hawkpaw?” She asked.
“Close, I’m his sister, Foxpaw” She said.
“I’m Stormpaw” Stormpaw introduced herself.
“So your Stormpaw, eh? You know Hawkpaw never stops talking about you”
“That’s….kinda creepy” Stormpaw said.
“Now, can you help me get out of here, please?” Stormpaw said, irritable.
“Hold on” Foxpaw said before disappearing over the edge.
A minute later she reappeared with a long root and pulled her out.
“I gotta go! If I’m late I might not go to the Gathering” Stormpaw said before charging back toward camp. She made it just in time, but had to explain why she wasn’t back at camp when she was supposed to.
Very embarrassing.
She walked beside Redpaw as they headed toward the Moonrock, a big flat plateau that had a weird glow to it when the moonlight reflect off of it. There is a high ledge where the leaders sit.
Leafclan was the first there, and they instantly began to mingle. Stormpaw began to look for Hawkpaw and Foxpaw.
She spotted the rusty siblings with another cat. (Foxpaw and Hawkpaw = the bomb.)
“Hello” she said as she bounded up.
“This is Blossompaw, our sister” Foxpaw introduced the brown she-cat.
Stormpaw dipped her head in greeting, but Blossompaw just snorted.
“She’s so stuck up” Foxpaw whispered.
Suddenly a loud yowl went up, and Mistclan with Snowclan scrambled up.
Mothstar, the Mistclan leader leapt up on her ledge and waited for Featherstar.
“Scorchstar looks pretty aggravated today” Hawkpaw commented.
“Oh, he always looks like that. But I think he seems more crabby than usual” Stormpaw purred.
“Shush! The gathering is starting” Said a bossy Mistclan warrior.
“Cats of all clans, tonight will be
a special gathering. For moons now all of our medicine cats have been having peculiar dreams”
Mothstar went on, but Stormpaw had a feeling she was being watched. She shuffled her paws.
“What’s wrong?” Hawkpaw asked.
“Oh, nothing” She said.
Turn around, turn around and let me see your eyes! Came that same voice inside her head.
She turned around, and saw a Leafclan queen staring at her.
Green! The voice repeated.
Suddenly Dewflower was at her side, and was staring the queen down.
The Leafclan queen stared back, but walked next to a black tom with faint white stripes.
“Who was that?” Stormpaw asked.
But Dewflower just stalked away and headed straight for Sandclaw.
She turned her attention back to the ledge.
“I will now let the medicine cats speak for themselves”
Suddenly four cats scrambled up to the top.
She recognized Riverstream.
A smaller cat stepped up, accompanied by a white cat.
“At first we thought Starclan was trying to tell us that the territories weren’t right, but every clan seems happy. And then one of our cats had a very unusual dream” Announced the white cat, and stepped back to let the small brown cat talk.
“I am Fawnstep, medicine cat of Leafclan. I had a dream that a lush wall of ivy climbing up a tree was growing. But suddenly fire consumed the tree, burning it down. Then a storm came, and rained on the fire. And the ivy began to grow again. It reminded me of something”
Fawnstep took a deep breath then started talking. “Four moons ago, a fire sparked in Leafclan territory. A kit was separated and believed to be killed by the fire. That kit was named Ivykit”
A shocked silence gripped the plateau. She noticed how Dewflower’s fur was fluffed up in shock. Stormpaw could smell her fear scent.
No! They can’t find out! Came that loud voice, again. She noticed how it was only in her head.
“Fire killed Ivykit, just like the fire killed the ivy on the tree. But we suspect she might be alive, just in another clan. With another name”
Dewflower began to shake, then to moan.
No!No!
“So we have Ivy, fire, and a storm. We know what the Ivy and fire are, but not the storm. We think it maybe the name of the missing cat. That is all the clues we have. This meeting is over”
Called out Mothstar.
Stormpaw blinked. This was a quick meeting. Very quick.
She understood why. The leaders and medicine cats want to get some extra sleep before they go to the Starpool.
“Bye Hawkpaw, Foxpaw, and Blossompaw” She called before following her clan-mates home.
Stormpaw woke up in her feather nest in the apprentice den.
She stretched her slender body.
Yellowcloud popped his head inside the den.
“Greycloud wants you to hunt in the thicket today” He said.
Stormpaw was glad. She preferred to hunt in the cover of the trees instead of the open.
“Redpaw will be hunting with you”
Stormpaw raced past Yellowcloud and ran into the clearing. She met Redpaw by the Fresh-Kill pile.
“Eat and then we will go” He said.
She flicked her tail in anticipation.
She picked up a desert bird and settled down to eat it.
“I asked Greycloud if we could hunt in the thicket because I know you like to hunt with cover” Redpaw said.
He nuzzled her side.
“T-thanks” Stormpaw said. She blinked.
She started to walk toward to camp entrance to hide her embarrassment.
She didn’t realize how hot their territory could be until she was asked to hunt out in the afternoon. She came back with burned pads and dehydration.
Since then Greycloud has been careful to take her out when it’s the coolest.
“You just can’t stand the heat like the rest of us” He had said.
She shook her head to clear the thoughts. She needed to focus on hunting.
After padding quickly over the rocky dip she and Redpaw headed over towards the Leafclan border.
She could see the thicket already. It was hard to miss.
When Stormpaw walked into the cool shade, she was grateful for a release from the heat.
“Ugh, I hate it in here” Redpaw complained.
“What?” She gasped at him.
“It’s hard to run and hunt with all these trees in the way!” He lashed out at the ground.
How could he hate it when she craved for it so much?
“Well we better start hunting” Stormpaw mumbled.
She padded around a thorn bush and pricked her ears for prey.
A desert thrush was rummaging around in tall grass nearby, and a plump vole squealed in it’s claws.
Two in one Stormpaw thought.
She was careful not to step on any leaves or thorns.
Placing her feet carefully down she slunk around a tree and came down-wind of her prey.
The thrush lifted its head when it heard an alarm call nearby, and she froze.
The thrush turned its head away from Stormpaw, and let out a squawk.
Excitement filled her chest and she leapt. She burst out of the tall grass without a noise, and landed two fox-lengths away from her prey, and leapt again with the force of Starclan.
She unsheathed her claws and the thrush started to flap it’s wings even though it was to late.
Stormpaw pinned the thrush to the ground, and killed it with a swift bite.
Suddenly Redpaw burst from the bushes nearby.
“That was amazing!” He yowled.
“And I though Sunpaw could jump high! You flew!”
Stormpaw licked her chest in embarrassment.
“Well, I didn’t try to make the jumps so high”
“That thrush is bigger than you! Wait till I tell everyone” Redpaw yowled then bounded away to camp.
“Oh Starclan” Stormpaw rolled her eyes.
Redpaw returned a couple of heartbeats later to help her carry the desert thrush and vole.
They padded quickly towards camp and before Stormpaw even reached the rock-wall, Redpaw split off to tell the camp.
“If only….” She hissed. Redpaw always had to brag about her.
It was annoying.
When she dragged her prey to the fresh-kill pile Poppypaw and Sunpaw kept congratulating her.
“It’s bigger than her!” The warriors whispered. “Redpaw says she flew!”
That reminds me…..
She spotted Redpaw talking excitedly to Dawnleaf and Snowwing.
“Redpaw” she hissed as she walked beside him.
Redpaw looked startled at her, and probably wanted to be anywhere else beside here.
“Look what you have done” She kept her hiss low enough so no one nearby could hear it.
The sky went dark as evil-looking clouds covered the sky. A slight thunder rolled across.
“I thought you would like the attention” He stammered.
She shook her head, biting back tears.
Now everybody would think she was special, when she couldn’t even go out of camp most of the day. She was going to fail them, and be the biggest shame of Desertclan.
Warriors were still whispering and looking curiously at her.
“What is up with them..” Redpaw asked Dawnleaf.
“A thrush has the best hearing, almost as good as ours. And they can get ten fox-lengths in the air in a couple of wing-beats. They want to know how she did it” Snowwing told them.
Stormpaw was getting more upset by the second.
“She can jump higher than Leafclan and Snowclan put together!” Poppypaw exclaimed.
Stormpaw noticed how many warriors looked at her soft paws and strong legs.
Getting very upset, she brushed past Redpaw and Snowwing as she climbed out of camp.
Lighting streaked across the sky, giving her a view of the whole valley for a second.
“Stormpaw wait! It’s not safe!” She heard Redpaw call out.
What does he know? She though grumpily.
Did he catch the thrush? No, I did! And now HE gets to brag about what I CAUGHT.
Her paws lead her across the dry plain just as rain began to pelt towards the ground.
Great.
More lightning streaked the sky. Stormpaw wasn’t scared.
She raced toward her favorite thicket.
Suddenly, the air seemed to pull her back.
She turned around.
A giant swirling cloud had formed a mile away.
It was as if all the darkest clouds blended together to make a big squat swirling tube of death.
Stormpaw had heard warriors talk about them, but never really listened.
Tornado.
The word burned in her mind, as did others. Run, Forest, Shelter, Quick.
Stormpaw pelted toward the thicket, just as the tornado began to move with the wind, towards her.
It moved so fast, and even a mile away it was huge.
The thicket was to thin to provide much cover, so she pressed on toward the Leafclan border.
Leafclan’s sweet scent filled her mouth as she crossed the border.
Trees pressed her side as she raced for any cover.
She heard the crack of branched and the crunch of roots being pulled out as the tornado ripped apart the thicket.
Stormpaw pushed out her chest. She couldn’t run forever. Her paws were bleeding and burning. She began to stumble and almost gave up.
Suddenly a small hill covered with rocks loomed infront of her.
She ducked behind them and huddled, waiting for the worst.
When nothing happened, she curled up into a small ball as rain began to seep through the rocks, dampening her pelt.
Chapter 3
Stormpaw lay flat on the ground.
Her mind swam and she experience more cold than she has ever felt.
Suddenly Stormpaw’s eyes opened, except she was not behind the bolder.
She was in a vast field surrounded by trees.
Stormpaw straightened up.
“Hello?” She mewed.
“Hello Ivykit” A meow came from behind.
Stormpaw whirled around.
A tall ginger cat with brown stripes and a white chest stood neatly away from her.
“You’ve got the wrong cat” Stormpaw mewed.
She shuffled her white paws.
“I’m called Stormpaw” She mewed shyly.
“I thought Stormpaw had blue eyes” The cat mused.
“Well then you thought wrong” Stormpaw said tartidly.
The cat shrugged.
“Well I’m Leafshadow” The she-cat mewed.
“Im your guardian” Leafshadow blinked kindly.
“Wh-?” Stormpaw mumbled.
“I thought Starclan had no favorites”
“Oh dear Stormpaw, you are far more than just a favorite, you have been wronged so many times. And you have escaped death so closely…..” Leafshadow’s voice faded away, and Stormpaw opened her eyes.
She was so cold, and so hungry.
Every fur on her pelt felt like needles, and her breath was clogged by dust.
“H-elp” She croaked.
Her paws churned feebly, desperate to find anything.
Stormpaw could not open up her eyes.
I’m going to die!
Suddenly Leafshadow’s scent curled around her.
Stormpaw felt the sensation of being dragged, along with strange voices.
Stormpaw could faintly recognize a few smells, the smell of Leafclan, and Hawkpaw.
“H-hawkpaw” She whispered. It was supposed to be a question, a question of what was going on.
“It’s going to be okay Stormpaw, I promise” She heard his voice so clearly.
And she believed her.
Stormpaw was laying on a soft bed of moss, and she could tell by moving her feet.
Moss is such softer than feathers and bracken…
She could also distinguish voices.
“She has dirt in her ears and eyes, and I think some in her lungs as well. We might need some yarrow to clear it out……..”

Stormpaw tried to call out, but only managed a soft mew.
“It’s okay Stormpaw, your safe now” It wasn’t Hawkpaw or the medicine cat, but Leafshadow.
Stormpaw didn’t know how long she slept. It felt like moons.
When she finally blinked her eyes open, she was surrounded by an ivy patch.
Ivykit….
She tried to stand, but tripped over her own paws.
“Lay back down” Said a soft voice.
Stormpaw looked up to see a small brown she cat carrying a wad of moss and leaves.
“I’m Fawnstep” The she-cat blinked kindly at her.
“H-hi. Where am I?” Stormpaw asked.
She was in a cool round den made of rock, shelves in the sides were stacked with all kinds of herbs.
A small pool lay in the middle, along with a nest.
“You poor thing. That Dark-cloud almost killed you”
Dark-cloud. Another meaning for tornado.
“Where is Leafshadow?” Stormpaw managed to mew.
“Leafshadow? Where did u see Leafshadow?” Fawnstep said with a sudden intrest.
“She was here, I smelled her”
Stormpaw was getting very confused.
“Stormpaw, I think you should know that Leafshadow was my mentor” Fawnstep sighed.
“What do you mean “was”?” She asked in a very small voice.
“Leafshadow…….is dead.” Fawnstep said.
“D-dead?”
“She died by an attack……” Fawnstep whispered.
“Who attacked her?” She asked.
The small she-cat just shook her head.
“By the way, somebody wants to talk to you”
The ferns around the entrence of the den shook and a ginger tom stood in the den.
“Hi, im Amberstar, leader of Leafclan”
The ginger tom blinked kindly.
